About

About Michi Journal

Discover Japan beyond the usual travel guide.

Michi Journal is an independent travel and culture journal exploring Japan through art, architecture, temples, traditions, and the stories behind the places we visit.

In Japanese, michi (道) means “path” or “way.”

Travel is more than moving from one destination to another. Sometimes, a quiet temple, a piece of architecture, a work of art, or a small detail in an unfamiliar town can change the way we see a place.

Michi Journal was created to document those discoveries and share a more thoughtful way of exploring Japan.

The Story Behind Michi Journal

Michi Journal began with a simple curiosity: what might we discover when we look beyond Japan’s familiar landmarks and take time to understand the art, architecture, and ideas behind the places we visit?

Living in Japan, I have long been drawn to art and the quiet details of everyday life: the light in a museum gallery, the space surrounding a temple, or the changing seasons in a garden. Studying culture at university also shaped my interest in how places, traditions, and the people who experience them are connected.

I created Michi Journal to explore those connections and share them with readers who are curious about Japan. This is not about seeing as many places as possible. It is about noticing more, asking better questions, and finding meaning in what we encounter.

Here, you will find stories and guides that bring together Japanese art, architecture, culture, and thoughtful travel. I hope they offer both practical inspiration and a reason to look a little closer.

Our Approach

We believe the best travel experiences come from understanding a little more about where you are.

That might mean learning the story behind a temple before visiting it, noticing the philosophy behind a Japanese garden, discovering a local artist, or simply taking the time to wander through a neighborhood without rushing to the next attraction.

Michi Journal is for travelers who want to see Japan, not just visit it.

Wherever your journey takes you, we hope this journal helps you discover a path of your own.
